about

After less than four decades of music existence, Galahad continues to consistently follow the once-trodden prog-rock path on their 12th album. Surprisingly, 'The Long Goodbye' features some interesting groove guitar elements that are uncommon to this trend, and to the band itself, but are a blast of pleasant freshness that may please fans open to the new.
Other than that, the base elements remain similar to those of previous releases, so here we will hear Galahad's typical playing cleverly interacting with these new additions. The result is quite a distinct and powerful progressive sound, which is what fans have always expected from the Brits. A worthy representation of this, for example, is the introduction to 'The Righteous And The Damned', where the accordion sounds return before taking on a massive and aggressive beat, making this anti-war track rich in symbolism, not only in terms of lyrics but also music. Galahad has experimented with orchestral landscapes more than once before and they are doing so on this album as well, for example in the opening 'Behind The Veil Of A Smile'.

The title track, which is the last on the tracklist (not counting the bonus tracks on the CD) will impress fans of this style. A calm and subdued piano intro, long orchestral passages and acoustic guitars, complemented by a great guitar solo with Pink Floyd-style choruses, as well as strings and Oldfield tubular bells - well, they know the drill!

Although the album ends after 5 tracks, the CD version also gives us two additional ones: "Darker Days", with a mix of solid guitars and spherical parts, kept in a style that coincides with all the material, and "Open Water" (presented in 2020 as part of the Galahad Electric Company series). It is an emotional piano ballad enhanced by Nicholson's poignant vocals.

Galahad is undeniably a guarantee of high quality in the world of modern yet classic progressive rock. "The Long Goodbye" represents another successful position in the band's discography, offering listeners diverse content on which you would like to focus a bit longer.
